How to populate records with product information from UPC and other barcodes

Updated yesterday

This automation is used only for fetching product information (like product name and image) from the barcodelookup.com API. If you want to scan barcodes to look up information from your Airtable records, use our Form with login instead!

miniExtensions integrates with barcodelookup.com to provide access to a large database of products by scanning barcodes. This can be used to download information about retail items into your Airtable base. When combined with our form it can be used to first generate records in Airtable by scanning barcodes, and then populating those records using this automation.

How to set it up

  1. Add a Barcode Lookup API key to your miniExtensions workspace, as described here.

  2. Go to your dashboard and select your workspace and Airtable base.

  3. Click Create Extension.

  4. Search for and select Fetch Data from UPC Codes and choose the table containing your barcodes.

  5. Under Setup, configure the following:

    1. Barcode Lookup API Key: Select the key you created in step 1.

    2. Barcode Field: Select the field containing your barcodes.

    3. Product Name, Description, Image and Category Fields: Select the fields where the appropriate data from Barcode Lookup should be stored.

  6. Under Processing Behavior, determine whether or not existing data should be overridden. By default, records with existing data will be skipped, which likely makes sense for this automation to not download the same data over and over again.

  7. Under Run, choose how to run the automation.

Supported Barcode Types

  • UPC (UNIVERSAL PRODUCT CODE)

  • EAN (INTERNATIONAL ARTICLE NUMBER)

  • ISBN (INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBER)

  • JAN (JAPANESE ARTICLE NUMBER)

  • ITF-14 (INTERLEAVED 2 OF 5 (I2OF5 OR ITF), also known as GTIN-14)
