How to copy values from one Airtable field to another

Set up field mappings and understand how blank source values are handled.

Use the Copy Airtable Value to Another Field automation to copy values between fields in the same record. You can copy one field or several fields in one run. This guide covers field mapping and blank sources; for starting or testing a run, see How to run an Automation.

Create the Copy Airtable Value to Another Field automation in the workspace and base containing your records.

Choose the fields to copy

  1. In the automation’s Setup section, choose the table.

  2. Select the source fields in Fields to Copy.

  3. Select the corresponding Destination Fields in the same order. The first source field maps to the first destination field, the second to the second, and so on.

Select the same number of source and destination fields. Destination fields must be writable, and a field cannot appear in both lists. Use destination field types that can accept the values you are copying.

Decide how to handle existing data

Check Existing Data Handling before running the automation. See how to overwrite existing output values for the shared automation setting.

Blank source values do not clear destination fields

If a source value is blank, the automation skips that field pair rather than writing a blank value into the destination. For example, copying an unchecked checkbox to another checkbox field does not uncheck the destination. If your workflow needs to clear an existing destination value, handle that separately instead of relying on an empty source field.

Examples

Test the mapping

  1. Use a view containing one test record. Check the selected source and destination fields and their order before running.

  2. Run the automation. Confirm that each copied value appears in the intended destination and that any existing values were handled as expected.

  3. Once the result is correct, select the view containing the records you want to process.
