How to edit Photos in Airtable

We offer different automations that can manipulate images in Airtable:

  1. 'Compress and Resize Images': This automation can compress and/or resize images stored in Airtable. HEIC files are converted to JPG before the selected compression, resizing, or rotation settings are applied. The output can therefore differ from the original image.

  2. 'Rotate Images': This automation is used to rotate images stored in Airtable. HEIC files are converted to JPG before the selected compression, resizing, or rotation settings are applied. The output can therefore differ from the original image.

  3. 'Cloudinary Image Editing': This automation is extremely powerful for image manipulation, including AI-assisted tools for background removal, upscaling, cropping and countless other transformations!

To prevent accidental degradation or loss of your original files, you cannot select the same field for input and output fields for the 'Compress, Resize, or Rotate Images' automation.

'Compress and Resize Images' and 'Rotate Images' are the same automation behind the scenes. They are included as separate shortcuts on the 'Create Extension' page for convenience. Selecting either shortcut will turn on the appropriate functions out of the box.

Set up compression, resizing or rotation

  1. Create the Compress and Resize Images automation, then select your Airtable base and table.

  2. Prepare two different attachment fields in Airtable: one with the original images and another for the edited copies.

  3. Select Original Attachments Field and Processed Attachments Field.

  4. Turn on the operations you need: Compress Images, Resize Images and/or Rotate Images. For compression, choose a Compression Quality.

  5. For resizing, use either Image Scale or Image Width/Image Height, not both methods. A scale of 0.5 makes the image half its original size. Setting only width or only height keeps the original proportions.

  6. For rotation, enter the Image Rotation Degree.

  7. Limit the run to a view containing one or two sample records, then run the automation. Compare the edited images with the originals before processing the rest.

Before processing more records, review the existing-data handling setting, especially if your output field already contains files.
