How to generate self links for Airtable records

The Generate Self Links for Records automation fills a linked-record field with a link back to the same record.

Before you start

Make sure the primary field has a unique, non-empty value for each record you will process. This automation identifies records using their primary-field value, so duplicate primary values can produce unexpected links. If your table has duplicate primary values, do not use this automation as a record-ID-based workaround.

Setup

  1. In Airtable, add a linked-record field that links to the same table.

  2. Create the Generate Self Links for Records automation in the workspace and base containing the table.

  3. Under Setup, choose the Table and set Link Field to the same-table linked-record field you created.

  4. In Processing Behavior, review Existing Data Handling, especially if the link field already contains values. See how to handle existing output values.

  5. Start with a view containing one test record, then run the automation. Open the resulting linked record and verify that it is the source record before processing more records.
